Fitness to Dive ExaminationsFor professional sports divers

In scuba diving (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus), the body must adapt to different pressures. This particularly affects the air-filled cavities of the head, such as the sinuses and middle ear. Any disease of these organs will compromise your fitness to dive. Breathing compressed air as well as sea water entering the ear canals may also lead to problems.

For these reasons, sports divers should undergo a fitness to dive examination

  • Before taking up scuba diving
  • Every three years
  • Annually from the age of 40
The thorough examination of the head and throat includes:
  • Microscopic examination of the eardrum (tympanic membrane)
  • Measurement of middle ear pressure and mobility of the ear drum (tympanometry)
  • Endoscopy of the nose and sinuses
  • Laryngoscopy using a high-magnification endoscope

Only an ENT specialist can carry out these examinations. For the sake of your health, we strongly recommend a fitness to dive examination by an ENT specialist in addition to those carried out by your general practitioner or internal medicine specialist. This will help to prevent lasting damage to the ENT area, which is put under particular pressure when diving.

We apply the guidelines of the German Underwater and Baromedical Society (GesellschaftfürTauch- und Überdruckmedizin - GTÜM - www.gtuem.org).

The cost of an ENT fitness to dive examination is rarely covered by either statutory or private health insurance and is invoiced as an IGeL service, in accordance with the German Medical Fee Schedule (Gebührenordnung für Ärzte - GOÄ).
